Higher and Tighter

Submitted by Atlas Indicators Investment Advisors on September 30th, 2026

The yield curve is a picture of how much interest the U.S. government has to pay to borrow money over different periods of time. These loans can vary from just a few months to several decades. Typically, the rates rise as the time horizon for repayment increases. But that is not always the case.

Operation Epic Cost

Submitted by Atlas Indicators Investment Advisors on September 30th, 2026

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) is Congress’ statutory, nonpartisan budget and economic analysis agency, employing professional analysts under politically-neutrality and conflict-of-interest rules. They just released an assessment of costs associated with the combat operations against Iran.

Avoiding Charges of Disorderly Conduct

Submitted by Atlas Indicators Investment Advisors on September 30th, 2026

America is drunk with debt, and the cost of the tab is under the influence of monetary and fiscal policies around the world. With few exceptions, our government saddles future generations with bills from current spending. It has been easy to do since the world’s primary reserve currency is the U.S. dollar, offering global markets a deep, liquid, and secure place to store savings.

Hoping for Better Angels

When a strike is thrown in baseball, it gets recorded as a K in the box score. This is a peculiar letter to use, but sportswriter Henry Chadwick already assigned  “S “ to sacrifice (later changed to single), so he used the last letter of struck to identify when a player struck out.

Cracking Up

Rudolph Diesel patented a compression-ignition engine long before diesel fuel was standardized. In 1893, Germany granted him the patent, a year after he applied for it. Shortly thereafter, America granted him one as well. Mr.

Time Keeps on Ticking

Submitted by Atlas Indicators Investment Advisors on September 30th, 2026

Let’s start this note off with a couple of definitions. A budget deficit is a flow measured over a period, typically a fiscal year. These occur when a nation spends an amount greater than the revenue it collects. In America, most of the revenue collected by the federal government is in the form of taxes.

Wet, With a Chance of Hope

Submitted by Atlas Indicators Investment Advisors on September 30th, 2026

Water is a vital economic input. Besides satiating one’s thirst in the middle of summer, it gets used in agriculture, energy production, manufacturing, mining, construction, transportation, and waste. Shortages in the Western United States are already pushing up costs on many of the previously mentioned uses. But El Nino is coming. Could that help?

Bond Vigilantes

Submitted by Atlas Indicators Investment Advisors on September 30th, 2026

For you kids out there who may be too young to remember ancient American history, please allow me a moment to turn back to the days when Arkansan Bill Clinton was president. It was toward the end of the last century when he asked, “You mean to tell me that the success of the economic program and my re-election hinges on the Federal Reserve and a bunch of f***ing bond traders?”

Getting Strait

Submitted by Atlas Indicators Investment Advisors on September 30th, 2026

Straits are all the news these days.  It seems every nation wants one or more.  Possession being nine tenths of the law sometimes overrules agreed upon conventions like the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.  That can be a problem as even a cursory glance at today’s news confirms.

Borrowed Time

Submitted by Atlas Indicators Investment Advisors on September 30th, 2026

Federal student loan defaults are reaching pre-pandemic levels according to data from the New York Federal Reserve’s Q1 2026 Household Debt and Credit Report. During the pandemic, payments on many educational loans were paused, offering those still owing money for college costs time to steady their balance sheets. The three-year pause ended in October 2023.

Chokeholds and Cormorants

Submitted by Atlas Indicators Investment Advisors on September 30th, 2026

I’ll bet most of us have seen a cormorant or two. They are generally black birds with a really long snaky neck that may be seen hanging around bodies of water diving for fish. They have been domesticated around the world for fishing. All you need to do is tame one and tie a cord around its neck. Not too tight now (but tight enough)! The cord acts as a leash.
